About this group

Formed in the late 1970s, the team provides a professional search and rescue service in the remote and mountainous areas of County Galway. The team’s cohort of highly skilled volunteers respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The women and men of Galway Mountain Rescue rarely shy away from a challenge. They regularly deploy at night and in poor weather to affect complex rescue operations. They provide sophisticated medical care in remote locations and co-ordinate with multiple emergency service to complete their mission. Their most persistent challenge does not result from the rugged terrain in which they operate. Instead, it’s the struggle to secure the funding required to keep this vital service in operation.

Reasons to support this group

  • To date in 2018 team members have logged 2,331hrs in training and provision of rescue services. Since the annual grant provided by the government falls short of the cost of running the service these same dedicated volunteers must also spend time fundraising. Your donation will reduce the amount of time given over to funding activities to allow the team focus on their important rescue work.
  • The team covers an area spanning more than 1,800 km2 (700 square miles), including some of Ireland’s most rugged terrain along the Wild Atlantic Way. As visitor numbers increase and the popularity of hillwalking grows, the team provides an important resource to keep visitors safe and support the local tourist economy.
  • The teams outreach activities to schools, youth groups, active retired associations and walking clubs helps to promote safe and healthy enjoyment of our outdoor environment.
